Brief History

How long have we been doing this?

Since 1970, when the most popular car on the road was the Ford Cortina and petrol cost 6p a litre!

A Brief History of Headley Voluntary Care.

Around 1969/1970, when the Reverend David Bentley was Rector of All Saints Church, Headley, his wife Clarice created Headley Voluntary Care. The aim was to help people in need and this help was to be provided by volunteers who were able to do so.

It began by providing transport to medical appointments, much like what happens today (2025). For two years, there was one coordinator who matched drivers to patients. She was Jan Ellison, our own Stuart's wife. She also organised the first coffee mornings in The Church Centre, which was built around the same time, to replace the former Church Room in Glebe Road. We now have approximately (things change) 10 coordinators, 45 drivers, 5 Coffee Leaders and almost 20 helpers.
